Various suppliers straight mouth pelhams
How the pelham works. When using two reins the snaffle rein will act like a normal snaffle putting pressure on the lips, bars, tongue and corners of the mouth. Longer cheeks will have more leverage and therefore will be stronger. Also the thickness of the mouthpiece will change the severity of the bit. The straight bar (mullen mouth) is milder than a jointed snaffle as it will work more on the horses tongue than the bars of the mouth. The flexi bit is made from a polyurethane material, which is light, and flexible. The rubber mouth bit is made from a tough and durable rubber. A bit whatever the particular design, should be wide enough to allow about 13mm (1/2 inch) on either side of the horses mouth. Bits that are too narrow will pinch, but also bits that are too wide will tend to slide across the horses mouth.
