The gag is unlike most bits, which are designed to encourage the horse to lower its head, the gag actually has the effect of raising the head. The gag will have the same effects as different bits by putting pressure on the lips, bars and corners of the mouth depending on the mouthpiece, as well as the poll. The mullen mouth is milder than a jointed snaffle as it will work more on the horses tongue than the bars of the mouth. The flexi bit is made from a polyurethane material, which is light, and flexible. A bit whatever the particular design, should be wide enough to allow about 13mm (1/2 inch) on either side of the horses mouth. Bits that are too narrow will pinch, but also bits that are too wide will tend to slide across the horses mouth.
