Large handcarved basalt-style obelisk
These great tapering pillars of stone were placed in pairs beside temple doors. Hieroglyphs were carved into all four faces of the pillar usually recording the deeds of a pharaoh. Many famous obelisks are now in other countries. Caligula took the tallest one (110 ft) to rome; paris has another; and the match to londons cleopatras needle (actually thotmes iii) is in central park.Approx height: 29 cm
