History We can trace our roots back to 1890 when the firm was founded. In 1999 we became part a larger group which has been inextricably linked with the farming community for over 120 years as farm stock auctioneers and valuers, rural chartered surveyors, land agents and quota brokers, agricultural insurance brokers and providers of finance. Prior to FMD the company was, in terms of throughput, the largest single site auction mart in Europe. In addition to its Carlisle operation it also runs other auctions at Bristol, Broughton in Furness, Kendal, Kirkby Stephen, Lazonby, Lockerbie, iddleton in Teesdale, Newcastleton and St. Johns Chapel. It has Land Agency offices at Newton Stewart and Millom, Cumbria Auction Rooms, Lowther Street, Carlisle
We have operated from Cumbria Auction Rooms on Lowther Street since 1973. A listed Victorian building, it was originally a wine merchant and auctioneers, subsequently becoming the bottling plant for the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme early in the 20th century before reverting to use as auction rooms. The building retains many interesting and attractive original features. As part of our current program of developments aimed at the present generation of auction-goers, the sale room was refurbished in a traditional style early in 2003. The inaugural Auction of Important Antique Furniture, Fine Art and Collectors Items at the refurbished auction rooms was filmed by the BBC for two editions of their programme Flog It! to be screened later this year.
