Exciting way to buy coins, banknotes, medals and stamps from around the world. It is very easy to buy at Spink. Here are some basic tips to help you:

Catalogues
Our illustrated catalogues are indispensable for clients wishing to buy at our auctions. Available four weeks before the sale, they contain descriptions of the items that are being sold, along with estimates. Our catalogues can also tell you if an item has previously been exhibited or appeared in a publication. Spink catalogues are meticulously researched and are a permanent reference source for collectors. Every item which will be auctioned is usually on display for several days before a sale. Viewing times for each sale can be found in the front of the relevant catalogue or by accessing our auction calendar. We invite you to come in, browse the lots, meet our specialists and talk to our staff. Our specialists will be happy to discuss the quality, background and condition of every item. These pre-sale viewings are free and open to the public, as are all auctions.

Bidding

If you decide to try to purchase an item, you can bid by any one of these three methods:
In Person
If you are a new client, we request that you supply us with a bank reference in advance of the day of sale. On the day of the sale, follow the signs for the registration. To register to bid, you should complete a form with your name and address, and we will then give you a paddle with your bidder number.

If there are two or more commission or postal bids on the auctioneers book, the bidding may open higher than the estimates in order to eliminate the under bidder

Written bid

Dont worry if you are too busy to attend an auction in person: Spink can bid for you. All you have to do is decide on your maximum bid for a particular lot and then send us a completed absentee bid form (written instructions that allow us to bid for you) at least 24 hours before the auction. Absentee bid forms are printed in our catalogues or are available from our offices or online. We will then try to obtain the item for you at the lowest possible price.

All purchases at auction attract a buyers premium of 15% plus any local taxes applicable. Full details of charges can be found in the Conditions of Sale printed in each catalogue.

Successful bidder in person: you are able to collect and pay during the sale itself.

Successful telephone bidder: an invoice will usually be posted out the day after the sale Successful written bidder (by email or post): an invoice will usually be posted out the day after the sale.

If you choose to pay by credit card, you will receive an invoice with your lots according to your specific postal instructions.

Payment can be made by Visa, Mastercard, cheque, cash, money order or bank wire transfer. For credit card payments made in line with our Conditions of Business, there is no surcharge. We must receive your payment within seven days of the sale. Once payment has been cleared, you will be given a collection order and you can collect your lot in person or arrange shipping through Spink. Items left with Spink will incur storage charges after a certain period.

The procedures for selling at Spink are simple.
Firstly, contact the Spink specialist in the appropriate field, such as the person who valued your item.

You can either bring your property to Spink yourself, arrange with your own shipper to deliver it, or ask for Spink to organise the shipping. We ask for property to arrive at least three months before the sale.

Every item consigned to Spink is closely examined, researched, described and assigned a pre-sale estimate in the catalogue - at no cost to you (other than the pre-agreed commission rate) - although a charge may be made for illustrations. We will send you a property schedule noting the auction estimate, your sale date and suggested reserve price.
The reserve price is the minimum price for your item. Your item will not be sold below this price. It is confidential and is determined by you in consultation with your specialist. You will receive a contract to sign, setting forth terms and fees for services we can provide.
Sold
After the auction, you will receive an after-sales advice, listing the prices at which your items sold. Ordinarily, the payment for all sold lots will be made 35 days after the sale date. This cheque will reflect sold prices less our selling charges.
provided that all lots have been paid for by the buyer we able to arrange long-term storage at competitive prices, should you require it.
Auction fees include a sellers commission on the final selling price (plus V A T where applicable), as well as any expenses for shipping property to our sale rooms, insurance cover, and catalogue illustration. The seller may also incur charges for customs clearance, and testing and authentication by outside experts, if required.
