Aleister Crowley was born in 1875 and is known as an influential occultist, writer, and poet. He was a member of several occult organizations, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and Ordo Templi Orientis among others. Crowley gained much notoriety during his lifetime, and was dubbed "The Wickedest Man In the World, he is best known today for his occult writings, especially The Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema. Crowley was also a chess player, painter, astrologer, hedonist, bisexual, drug experimenter, and social critic. During his lifetime he worked with (and in some cases made enemies of) many revered occultists including William Butler Yeats, Arthur Edward Waite, Allan Bennett, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and Gerald Gardner. Crowley worked with a variety of mystical systems including Christian mysticism, Qabalah, Hermeticism, the religion of Ancient Egypt, Theurgy, Freemasonry, Alchemy, Theosophy, the works of Eliphas Levi, Papus, Enochian magic, and Renaissance grimoires. After the 1904 Book of the Law, Crowley founded the religious and philosophical system he called Thelema. Crowley died in 1947, and remains to this day a figure of mystery, controversey and is possibly the most misunderstood personality to figure in the new era of modern day witchcraft.
