Blue Frog Necklace |
This design was based on a photo of the blue poison dart frog (Dendrobates azureus). These little frogs are easily recognized by their amazing blue color, which is generally darker on the limbs and belly and overlaid with black spots or patches, especially on the head and back. An adult frog has a body about 2 inches (5 cm) long and weighs about 0.3 ounce (8 g). They are active during the day and can be found hiding among boulders and debris near streams. However they lack toe webbing and are poor swimmers so they are never found in the water. As their name (and their colour) implies poison dart frogs can release toxins from the skin that are distasteful and potentially lethal to would-be predators. Three very toxic species of poison dart frogs from Colombia and South America are utilized by Indians to poison the tips of blowgun darts. The blue poison dart frog was not discovered until 1968 and is found in only a few isolated rainforest patches of southern Suriname. The intricate process of applying hot vitreous enamel is an ancient art that has been passed on through the centuries. Each piece is hand enamelled with fine glass powder. First of all each item is prepared and cleaned thoroughly to remove any form of contamination. The glass powder is ground in a mortar mixed with water and then painted into each area taking care not to allow any overrun. This is then dried and fired in a kiln at 800 degrees Celcius. Sometimes the item is fired twice to achieve the correct colours. Max height: 23mm Overall length 18 inches (45cm). Supplied in a satin-lined gift box.
