FEEDBACK – How to Keep It Clean

Feedback is a system whereby eBay buyers and sellers rate one another based on actual experience. Positive feedback indicates a problem-free transaction, neutral suggests room for improvement, NEGATIVE feedback suggests a transaction was seriously flawed and too many negatives can ruin your eBay business.

You need to know reasons why negative feedback is given and how to avoid it.

Reasons for giving negatives:

• Delay in sending product. ‘Delay’ for some people is more than a day between paying and receiving their product, for most three or four days is acceptable. Seven days is too long except for overseas deliveries.

• Sending product badly wrapped. Pack products carefully, using bubble wrap or padded bags. It can be expensive but you are allowed to add packing charges to postal costs.

• Not sending product at all. More than three negatives for this could get you suspended or barred from eBay. Keep careful records of payment dates and aim for fast delivery.

• Item not as described. Describe items as carefully and comprehensively as possible and always include a message like: ‘Item described to the best of our ability. Money back on all items with listing mistakes or errors.’

• Not answering emails. Often the problem isn’t yours, the other person may have spam filters preventing your email getting through, often they’re just don’t check before leaving negative feedback. An estimated one-third of emails miss their intended destination, mainly due to spam filters. We recommend you send messages sent through eBay’s system, they succeed more often than traditional email.

• Charging high postage and trying to make more money that way. You can charge extra for packing and processing but be realistic. Don’t charge £10 for a package costing £3 to post and £2 for packing materials. It does happen.

• In retaliation for leaving negative feedback for other eBayers. This is the most common reason for negative feedback and something you must learn to live with.

• Just Because! Some people genuinely like leaving negatives, they’re hard to spot but you can take steps to avoid them. You can also pre-approve bidders, allowing you to sell purely to individuals who have no negative feedback themselves and don’t leave it for others. You might get people to email you before bidding, you check them out, you approve or bar them from bidding. Visit eBay’s Feedback Forum for lots of advice and comments from seasoned sellers.

• A friendly, considerate disposition, and the ability to handle difficult people, all help avoid the ‘Big N*’ which can seriously damage your business. (*Negative feedback!!!).

 

Dropshipping Tips

‘Dropshipping’ describes a process whereby a manufacturer or supplier delivers products directly to your customers without you ever needing to stock or pre-purchase goods.

This is how the dropshipping process typically works:

• You promote products for sale – on or off the Internet, on eBay, by direct mail, through press advertisements.

• You take orders, bank payments and wait for money to clear.

• You email, fax, phone or write to the supplying company (the dropshipper) giving customer name and address and product details.

• The dropshipping company processes the product direct to your buyers, usually with your company details included, not theirs.

• The dropshipping company invoices you an agreed price, you pay them, that’s it, all done.

That’s the theory: in practice it can be so different. Dropshipping is a wonderful way to make big money fast, but there are problems to contemplate and easy ways to prevent them. They include:

* Choose dropshipping partners as carefully as you choose products themselves. Sadly, it’s a fact that many business owners care more about money than customer care and this can reflect badly for you, in the form of buyer complaints, poor quality products, long delays between customers paying for and receiving their goods.

* There are many excellent membership sites offering sound contact details for worldwide wholesalers and dropshipping companies. The best I’ve found so far is www.wholesalepages.co.uk. The company has a team of researchers on constant lookout for new dropshipping and wholesale suppliers to add to their directory. * Arrange exclusive dropshipping deals with wholesalers and exhibitors at trade fairs. Just because these people don’t dropship now doesn’t mean they don’t want to. They may not have been asked about dropshipping, they may not know how dropshipping works. It’s your job to educate them. I’ll tell you how in next week’s ezine.

* Look for local suppliers and ask permission to pack goods yourself at their premises, so you can insert special offer flyers, money-off vouchers. For distant suppliers keep close tabs on how well they serve your customers.

* My experience of dropshipping has been exceptional. I telephone every potential dropshipper before promoting their products. I get to know the other person, determine how serious they are about their business, how approachable they are. Those I have chosen for my business talked more about customers and products than money, they were considerate and caring, keen to please. That first impression has always served me well. Do the same, you won’t be disappointed.
