The artist has managed to give a feeling of movement to the stationary figures of Garuda and Vishnu. The whole flow of the sculpture is to the right of the two gods. Vishnu rides upon Garuda's back as if he were taking a large stride to the heavens. Garuda sits beneath Vishnu looking up adorningly at his Lord with his hands clasped in the wai position. Garuda's wings are dramatically fully spread. Vishnu's hands hold a conch, discus and prayer mala. The conch represents Om, the first sound of creation and also the beginning of matter, since sound and matter are considered to be synonymous. The discus is thought to represent the sun. Vishnu, like Shiva, was originally a minor deity with only five out of 1,028 hymns in the Rig Veda addressed to him. Vishnu seems to have been derived from a solar deity. The discus is a vestige of his solar origins. Carved of Sange-rathek stone, a black Marble made from the city of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India and carved in Tamil Nadu. Sange-rathek is found in Jhansi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The stone is known for its wonderful deep black/blue color and the colored purple and yellow veins that flow through it. Looking into a piece of sange-rathek is like staring into deep space and seeing distant galaxies. It is a very unique and wonderful stone. Sculpture is very rare to find in this stone because there are seldom pieces of raw stone large enough to accommodate a full-sized sculpture. Sculpture weighs 31 pounds. Dimensions: 20.5"H x 14"W x 4"D
