Huichol Climbing Iguana
Huichol Indians. These Indians live in the remote mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco, Mexico. Because of their extreme remoteness they were untouched by the Spanish invaders. They still live an extremely magical life. Religion and art are inextricably intertwined in Huichol life; therefore their deities and ceremonies are incorporated into their art. The Huichol beliefs are complex and elaborate involving ritual prayer and ceremony. Therefore each piece of Huichol art in addition to being a beautiful work of art, carries it's own historical and spiritual significance. To create the intricate designs, each tiny glass seed bead is individually pressed onto a beeswax coated surface, either carved wood or a hollowed out gourd.
